Extensive research carried out for many years by vocational psychologists points to the importance of a match or a fit between the personalities of workers and the characteristics of the job. The most highly respected and prolific of these researchers was John Holland, whose theory proposed that we are most satisfied in jobs that are "congruent" with our personalities. His theory identified six job types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC). Holland's theory is now the most encompassing of all approaches to understanding job success. You will learn more about these job types after you complete the test. First, let's discover your vocational type!
I created this brief online version of the RIASEC Survey in order to provide users with immediate feedback about their vocational type. The survey is divided into two parts. For each of the eleven questions in Part One, indicate your preference. You can only pick one choice for each item, so decide which of the 3 or 4 alternatives best suits you. You must answer each question in order for your results to be calculated.
Once you are finished with Part One of the RIASEC Survey, your vocational type will be revealed in a new window. Please note: if you are using an older browser, you may need to disable your popup blocker in order to see your results. After your vocational type has been revealed, click the provided link in order to return to the remainder of the survey. After you have completed Part Two of the RIASEC Survey, you will be provided with information about what your results mean and what career paths are associated with your vocational type.
