Your Healthy Brain

Discover the keys to preventing mental decline, and have fun in the process!

Maintaining your mental fitness is as important as maintaining your physical fitness as you age. Creative pursuits such as painting or knitting are an excellent means to prevent mental decline and also maintain physical dexterity. Working memory, attention and the ability to shift mental focus are necessary operations for creativity which is associated with the brain's prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex.

Openness to new ideas and a flexible attitude toward change are the essence of creativity. So, while hobbies which encourage creative expression are important to preventing mental decline, it is equally important to maintain a broad social base as we age. Joining a club or involvement with group activities exposes us to individuals with differing perspectives and new ideas; in turn, our brain is challenged to remain flexible as our mental attitudes must remain flexible. Social activities centered on a favorite hobby are an enjoyable and excellent way to maintain your creativity and broaden your social sphere while benefitting your brain's health.

Engaging in mentally stimulating activities such as playing an instrument, solving the daily crossword puzzle, or playing Sudoku are excellent and fun ways to maintain and improve your cognition. Are you a computer game player, or do you prefer other types of games? How do you keep your mind active through play?

If you'd like to learn more about the cognitive benefits of games, take the Games and Cognition Survey. After the survey you will find articles and information about games and cognition. Of course, you'll also have the opportunity to play some games, too!
