About the Author
Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is one of the pioneers of the field of adult development and aging.
The author of numerous books and articles, she has also appeared in the national media including The New York Times, Newsweek, The Boston Globe, Redbook, More Magazine, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Natural Health, and the Chicago Tribune. Her work has been a topic of interviews on the Discovery Health Channel and the online guide to the PBS series Discovering Psychology.
She has received major teaching and mentoring awards both nationally and at her university. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Gerontological Society of America, she serves in a variety of leadership roles. In 2011, she received a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association for her leadership and dedication to the profession.
At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, she teaches large lecture courses in introductory psychology and the psychology of aging. For three years in a row, she received a Student Choice Award from the Residential First-Year Experience program. In addition, she coordinates the Aging and Development Lab where both undergraduate and graduate students conduct research on personality, aging, and cognition. Her most recent research project is investigating the relationship between videogaming and cognition in older adults.
The mother of two daughters, she resides in Amherst, Massachusetts with her husband. Her hobbies include knitting, aerobics, and piano.
